Charles Sumner - Senator who spoke passionately against slavery and the south and in particulair Senator Butler. An angry nephew of Senator Butler beat Sumner over the head with a cane and Sumner suffered brain damage.
John Brown - Organized a slave revolt, but was caught and hung.
Stephan Douglas- Ran against Lincoln for senator and won. During the debates, it was made clear that Lincoln believed slavery was immoral. It was through the debates that people started to consider Lincoln a potential presedential canidate.
Abraham Lincoln - A politiciaon who believed slavery was immoral. When the country was torn in two over states rights for slavery, he as president successufully kept the nation together, winning the war for the union side. After he passed the Emancipation Proclamation, he was assassinated.

Ulysses S. Grant - Union General who headed the army.
Robert E. Lee - Confederate General who headed the army. He was offered a post in both armies and made the difficult decision to side with the south. He was instrumental in helping the nation heal after the war.
William Tecumseh Sherman - Commander of the military division of the Mississippi He lead a march to Georgia destroying houses, livestock and crops in an attempt to ruin the southerns' moral and will for war.
